Adult Temper Tantrums

temper tantrum

One of my favorite classes in undergrad was philosophy, and one sentence I read amongst millions remains with me to this day. It simply stated that the ultimate form of tolerance is being able to discuss matters we disagree upon with civility and a realization that we do not have to agree. Today, this concept is largely lost on the populus writ large. We are far more concerned with repeating our point of view ad nauseam and vehemently criticizing those who disagree. The adult temper tantrum has (as demonstrated by politicians) become the de facto standard. Rather than working to create win-wins, we work hard to ensure everyone suffers more (i.e., ICE and TSA agents).

This type of thinking and action is antithetical to progress, growth, and, ultimately, sustained success. However, this appears to be the prevailing or popular mindset. I still believe a bright and very lucrative future exists for those who choose to surround themselves with like-minded others who disagree with civility and understand that polite and civil discord can create the win-wins necessary for widespread and sustained success. As the The Epistemic Psychosis™ becomes more entrenched the value of trusted advisors who foster such dialogue and communicate focused on growth versus commiseration will become the distinctive factor in success.
